Derald Ray Waltrip, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Ruidoso, New Mexico, on November 26, 2024. Derald was born on May 11, 1930, in Crane, Texas, to Garrett and Exa Waltrip.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alta Waltrip, two sons, Mike and Don Waltrip, three brothers, Kenneth, Leon, and Chick, and one sister, Gloria Cummins. Derald is survived by his daughter, Shirley Hungate(James) of Alamogordo, NM, three grandchildren, Jaclyn Brady(Roy), Alan Waltrip(Jana), and Christopher Ray(Julia), and four great-grandchildren, Travis Henderson(USAF), Thomas Ray, Willow Waltrip, and Vivian Ray.
A U.S. Army veteran, Derald served in the Korean War. He was a long-time resident of Ruidoso, where he lived for over 65 years. Derald dedicated much of his life to serving his community as a firefighter and later as fire marshall. He was a talented artist, particularly skilled in woodworking, and owned and operated Gateway Mill for over 50 years, where he worked as a custom cabinet maker. In addition to his woodworking craft, Derald had a lifelong passion for cars and mechanics, often found with his head under the hood of a vehicle.
Derald passed away peacefully at home with his girlfriend, Amy Sanford, and his loving family by his side. His family has chosen not to hold a memorial service or funeral. Instead, they celebrated his life privately over the Thanksgiving holiday, reflecting on and cherishing the memories of a man who made a lasting impact on everyone he met.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers and medical professionals who provided him with care in his final months. Derald’s life was marked by kindness, generosity, and integrity. Known as the last of the “Good Ole Boys,” Derald was a man of his word—his handshake as solid as any contract. His selflessness and willingness to help others, even strangers, left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Derald lived a long, fulfilling life surrounded by the love and respect of his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
